Der ganze Körper des Männchens ist mit Odontoden besetzt. Auch die Weibchen bilden Interopercular-Odontoden aus. Die Bestachlung ist i. A. länger als bei anderen Hypancistrien. Männchen erkennt man am wohl am besten am starken Odontodenwuchs auf dem ersten Brustflossenstrahl.
