Trujillo – Huacas del Sol y de la Luna

In the afternoon we arrived at Trujillo, the third largest city of Peru. Our path led directly into the valley of the Río Moche (pink marker). After this river was the former culture around the 3rd to 7th century named. In this valley there are two piramds:

Huaca del Sol (Pyramid of the sun)

Huaca del Sol has a size of about 340 m × 220 m × 41 m. So they should be the largest massive building on the South American mainland. For various reasons (redirection of the río Moche, art thieves …) the pyramid is badly damaged.

Huaca de la Luna (Pyramid of the moon)

Huaca de la Luna is located about 500 m from Huaca del Sol by beeline. This pyramid is smaller (290 m x 210m) and better. In the last years there extensive excavations were made. In addition to many decorative paintings, the former construction with adobe is visible.

Between the two pyramids, there is the so-called “urban zone”. In this area there stand apparently various “cottage” almost 2000 years ago. It is not yet conclusive whether there privileged persons or only the common people lived. Finds (especially ceramics) from the excavations can be seen in the nearby museum.

After seeing the Huacas we drove into the city center, in the old town of Trujillo. On the evening we had time to explore the city. A destination was a market hall, because our guide said that there is a pet store. In the tanks there were no special fishes. The sale of small pets stimulated to smile.
On the next morning we make a city guide. This led mainly in the buildings of the colonial era. In Casa Urquiaga you can visit the room that Simon Bolivar has inhabited.
