To Lima – Unexpected reunion with Caracas (Venezuela)

During our holiday we had to once again to South America.
Via Madrid we wanted to go to South America. However, we did not expect to see Caracas, Venezuela (after 2011 and 2012). First you will find some pictures of Venezuela, from abundant altitude of 10,000 m.

The Río Arauca is in southwestern Venezuela’s border with Colombia, we now also flown over before we reached the “Green Hell” of Peru.

From Frankfurt you fly via Madrid to Lima. If you want to pre-view the route, it is assumed that this corresponds to a straight line. Therefore, I expected that we will reach the South American continent in Suriname. Since it was a day flight I was looking forward to a nice flight over the Brazilian rain forest north of Manaus.

The further we were over the Atlantic Ocean, the further the route slipped to the west on the display. That we passed Caracas, was very surprising. This was a detour of about 500 km. I assume that the overflight rights over the Bolivar countries are much cheaper than Brazil.

After about 18 hours of traveling we had arrived safely – local time about 6.30 p.m. Around 8:30 p.m we were in our hotel. Since there was no restaurant, we had something (water) bring to drink.

In a few minutes we also found a kiosk.
I demanded 4 bottles of water and asked the price. The answer, verbatim: 6 EURO.
The price has not really surprised me, because in Buenos Aires there the bottle of water also cost the equivalent from 2 Euro at kiosks. Surprised me that they called us the price in EURO.
When I looked at the bottle in the hotel I discovered the next surprise: 635 ml – what a comic quantity?!
