Zunächst von Fowler, 1945 als Euacanthagenys caquetae beschrieben.
1978 Überstellung in die Gattung Spatuloricaria, zu der jedoch schon Spatuloricaria caquetae Fowler, 1943 gehörte. Daher wurde von I.J.H. Isbrücker ein neuer Name vergeben, in Anlehnung an den alten Gattungsnamen, der zum Synonym von Spatuloricaria wurde.
