Es sind zwei Arten-Untergruppen zu unterscheiden:
vittata-Gruppe (Peckoltia vittata, Peckoltia braueri,...) und L38-Gruppe ( L38, L80, L103, Peckoltia sp. "Zwerg").
Peckoltia sp. "L134" ist keiner der beiden Gruppen zuzuordnen.
Die Peckoltias der L38-Gruppe unterscheiden sich von denen der vittata-Gruppe durch die kleinere Größe. Auffällig ist auch, dass die Odontoden der geschlechtsreifen Männchen bei der L38-Gruppe permanent vorhanden sind. Im Gegensat
vittata-Gruppe (Peckoltia vittata, Peckoltia braueri,...) und L38-Gruppe ( L38, L80, L103, Peckoltia sp. "Zwerg").
