Amazonas January/February 2018 – “Catfish Press Review”

Hello catfish freaks,

today I would like to introduce you in three articles of the current issue of magazine Amazonas (January / February 2018):

Andrew Blumhagen und Jeanette Blumhagen “The search for the missing barbels” (“Die Suche nach den fehlenden Barteln”)

The authors report from a group Ancistrus that they selected from a wild collection. These animals are from Río Araza in Peru. Natan Lujan determined these: they are very similar but not identical to Ancistrus megalostomus from Bolivia. Therefore, these species called Ancistrus cf. megalostomus “Inambari”.

The males only have short tentacles during the spawning season and then form them back again. The authors could already multiply this catfish in 2016.

Hans-Georg Evers “” (“Nachhaltiges aus Brasilien”)

Hans informs about the companies H&K and Tanganjika Fish Farm. Both companies have established a breeding project of plecos in Fortaleza, Brazil. In collaboration with the authorities in Brasilia, they are trying to breed plecos and then offer these for export. The wild animals not listed on the positive list of Brazil, therefore these should not be exported.

They have already succeeded in multiplying of Hypostomus sertanejo and Glyptoperichthys / Pterygoplichthys parnaibae. Other attractive plecos of this project are currently Hypostomus pusarum and Parotocinclus haroldoi.

Furthermore, they devote themselves to different species of tretras. For example Moenkhausia cosmops, Hyphessobrycon wadai, …

Hans-Georg Evers “Dry season” (“Trockenzeit”)

Hans writes about the strongly changing water conditions, especially during the dry season: the (smaller) rivers partly dry up, there are remaining waterholes, in which the water quality deteriorates strongly. During this time, there are always times to heavy rainfall, which then lead to extreme changes in water. As an example, he mentions a short-term temperature fluctuation between 18.9 and 26.5 ° C.

In these extreme conditions, he has caught fish including: Cochliodon / Hypostomus pyrineusi, Corydoras sp. C120, Corydoras sp. CW 110, Brochis sp. CW 136, …

Are these climate extremes the solution for the multiplication of some species?
