Who is who?<\/p>\n<h2>&#8220;L 165&#8221; is <em>Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>There are no doubts: <em>Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps<\/em> and \u201eL 165\u201c are the same species.<\/p>\n<p>In 1854, Rudolph Kner described <em>Ancistrus gibbiceps<\/em> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biodiversitylibrary.org\/page\/6344340#page\/376\/mode\/1up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;Die Hypostomiden. Zweite Hauptgruppe der Familie der Panzerfische.&#8221; (Denkschriften der Kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften \/ Mathematisch-Naturwissenschaftliche Classe.)<\/a>. He used a dried up exemplar. This should be from Rio Negro near Marabitanos. (Accordingly, notes and annotations also from scripts by Humboldt, the position of Marabitanos is approximately 0.93871\u00b0N, 66.80989\u00b0W near the border to Colombia and Venezuela.)<\/p>\n<p>In 1858, Gill defined the genus <em>Pterygoplichthys<\/em>. He added <em>Ancistrus gibbiceps<\/em> to this new genus.<\/p>\n<p>In 1991, Claude Weber established the genus <em>Glyptoperichthys<\/em> and added this specie.<br \/>\nIn connection with the genus <em>Liposarcus<\/em>, G\u00fcnther 1864, today we see the kinship relations critically. Therefore, the last two genera are synonyms of <em>Pterygoplichthys<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Rainer Stawikowski reported an import of a catfish species by the company Transfish, Munich in the magazin <a href=\"http:\/\/datz.de\/images\/stories\/artikel-l-nummern\/L%20164%20bis%20L%20165%20-%20Segelschilderwelse%201994-6.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">DATZ 6\/1994<\/a>. Rainer Stawikowski gave this species the L-number \u201cL 165\u201d and noted that this species correspondens to the description of <em>Pterygoplichthys<\/em> \/ <em>Glyptoperichthys gibbiceps<\/em>. The exact fishing location is unknown. Due to the location of Manaus but one can assume that the imported animals come from the Rio Negro.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/d\/u\/0\/embed?mid=1R9Tzm0SS2K4fvFB4_7pyS4GQWBmkwROZ\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>Forms \/ species that are the same or similar to <em>Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>At first, we look from the Rio Negro to north:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.suedamerikafans.de\/en\/wels-datenbank\/welsart\/?art=715\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Pterygoplichthys<\/em> cf. <em>gibbiceps<\/em> &#8220;Kolumbien&#8221;<\/a> und<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.suedamerikafans.de\/en\/wels-datenbank\/welsart\/?art=1370\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Pterygoplichthys<\/em> cf. <em>gibbiceps<\/em> &#8220;Venezuela&#8221;<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We can found these catfishes almost in the entire R\u00edo Orinoco basin. The R\u00edo Orinoco is obviously not a habitat border. Therfore, we can assume that these are the same species.<\/p>\n<p>If we look from Rio Negro to south there is another image. Today, it looks like that the Amazonas \/ Rio Solim\u00f5es seems to be a habitat border. In each greater river basin there lives moste likely one or more species \/ forms more or less similar to <em>Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps<\/em>. They also differ quite clearly.<\/p>\n<p>Also, on our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.suedamerikafans.de\/en\/brasilien-2017-rio-solimoes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tour along the Rio Solim\u00f5es<\/a> I was able to discover only a single specimen of or similar to <em>Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps<\/em> by fishermen and on fish markets. I found this on the fish market of Manaus. Along the Rio Solim\u00f5es <a href=\"https:\/\/www.suedamerikafans.de\/en\/wels-datenbank\/welsart\/?art=650\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Pterygoplichthys pardalis<\/em><\/a> occurs exclusively in relation to the tribe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.suedamerikafans.de\/en\/wels-datenbank\/tribus\/?tribus_name=Pterygoplichthini\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Pterygoplichthini<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Pterygoplichthys \/ Glyptoperichthys gibbiceps seem to be live more away from the main stream.<br \/>\nOther known species \/ forms similar to Pterygoplichthys \/ Glyptoperichthys gibbiceps are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.suedamerikafans.de\/en\/wels-datenbank\/welsart\/?art=152\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Pterygoplichthys<\/em>  cf. <em>gibbiceps<\/em> (L 83) from Rio Xingu<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.suedamerikafans.de\/en\/wels-datenbank\/welsart\/?art=250\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Pterygoplichthys<\/em> cf. <em>gibbiceps<\/em> (L 164) from Rio Tef\u00e9<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.suedamerikafans.de\/en\/wels-datenbank\/welsart\/?art=438\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Pterygoplichthys<\/em> cf. <em>gibbiceps<\/em> (L 347) from Rio do Para<\/a>,<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.suedamerikafans.de\/en\/wels-datenbank\/welsart\/?art=1632\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Pterygoplichthys<\/em>  cf. <em>gibbiceps<\/em> (L 472) fron Bolivia (R\u00edo Paragua, Laguna Bay, R\u00edo Blanco, &#8230;)<\/a>,<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Whether these are one species with many forms or more species, must show scientific research.<br \/>\n(All entries in the database to  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.suedamerikafans.de\/en\/wels-datenbank\/gefunden\/?db_familie=alle&#038;db_unterfamilie=alle&#038;db_bezeichnung=gibbiceps&#038;db_bilder=ja\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Pterygoplichthys<\/em> (cf.) <em>gibbiceps<\/em><\/a>.)<\/p>\n<h2>&#8220;L 83&#8221; = <em>Pterygoplichthys xinguensis<\/em>?<\/h2>\n<p>We know \u201eL 83\u201c as Pterygoplichthys from Rio Xingu. It\u2019s very similar to <em>Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps<\/em>. The important difference is that the lines between the dark points\/spots are less round and looks more like wormlines. &#8220;L 165&#8221; has a pattern like honeycombs and &#8220;L 83&#8221; more like a net.<\/p>\n<p>In 1991, Claude Weber describted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.suedamerikafans.de\/en\/wels-datenbank\/welsart\/?art=2563\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Glyptoperichthys xinguensis<\/em> (<em>Pterygoplichthys xinguensis<\/em>)<\/a> foom Rio Fresco near the village Aldeio Gorotire, in the Rio Xingu basin in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biodiversitylibrary.org\/page\/41270921#page\/196\/mode\/1up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;Nouveaux taxa dans Pterygoplichthys sensu lato (Pisces,Siluriformes, Loricariidae)&#8221; (Revue Suisse de Zoologie, Vol. 98)<\/a>. There we can read: \u201e<em>G<\/em>. <em>xinguensis<\/em> se distingue par une livr\u00e9e sombre \u00e0 petits points clairs sur tout le corps et les nageoires, \u2026\u201c (<em>Glyptoperichthys xinguensis<\/em> is characterized by a dark coloration with small luminous points on the whole body and fins, \u2026).<\/p>\n<p>Also Jonathan W. Armbruster &#038; Lawrence M. Page wrote in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scielo.br\/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&#038;pid=S1679-62252006000400003&#038;tlng=en&#038;lng=en&#038;nrm=iso\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Redescription of Pterygoplichthys punctatus and description of a new species of Pterygoplichthys (Siluriformes: Loricariidae)&#8221; (Neotropical Ichthyology, Vol. 4 No. 4)<\/a> about <em>Pterygoplichthys xinguensis<\/em> and <em>Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps<\/em>. <\/p>\n<p>Both species are compared directly in the key:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201elarge, dark spots\u201c  imply <em>Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps<\/em> and<\/li>\n<li>\u201elight spots\u201c imply <em>Pterygoplichthys xinguensis<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Does \u201cL 83\u201d have big black or (normal) light spots?<br \/>\nWe look to the known pictures of <em>Pterygoplichthys xinguensis<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.suedamerikafans.de\/loricariidae\/glyptoperichthys\/xinguensis\/xinguensis_03.jpg\"><br \/>\nPhoto: Jos\u00e9 Birindelli (<a href=\"http:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-nc\/3.0\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CC BY-NC<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>or in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planetcatfish.com\/common\/image.php?species=pterygoplichthys_xinguensis&amp;image_id=16763\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PlanetCatfish<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There are light spots, but no big dark spots.<\/p>\n<p>Both pictures are almost full-grown animals. Does \u201cL 83\u201d correspondend to young <em>Pterygoplichthys xinguensis<\/em>?<\/p>\n<p>I think, no. We can find a lot of pictures from \u201eL 83\u201c where the animals have a size greater than 20 cm.<br \/>\nThe lines of honeycombs \/ net make no attempt to rip. Claude Weber used an<br \/>\n<em>Pterygoplichthys xinguensis<\/em> with a standard length of 29 cm as holotype. The paratype has a standard length of 26 cm. Since the honeycombs \/ net have been completely gone? That is very unlikely.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, I think that \u201cL 83\u201d is a form from ( or a species very similar to) <em>Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps<\/em>, but it is not <em>Pterygoplichthys xinguensis<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Futhermore, we can find <em>Pterygoplichthys<\/em> cf. <em>gibbiceps<\/em> (L 83) on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.suedamerikafans.de\/en\/positivlisten-in-brasilien\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">positive list of Brazil<\/a>. It\u2019s allowed for export. On the other site <em>Pterygoplichthys xinguensis<\/em> is not in this list, it\u2019s not allowed for export.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How is the assignment from Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps to the L-numbers?
